ALDEBURGH LIFEBOATS

The boats are crewed by local people who, apart from the coxswain and mechanic, are all volunteers.

Lifeboats have been stationed at Aldeburgh since 1851 and have always been a fabric of the Town’s life. When the call comes for the Lifeboat boat, either boat can be launched in between 8-12 minutes.

The offshore Lifeboat ‘Freddie Cooper’ is a Mersey Class 37’ Self-Righter, with a top speed of over 16 knots and was built in 1993 at a cost of £680,000. The inshore lifeboat ‘Bob Savage’ is a 16’-6" D Class Inflatable capable of 20 knots and was delivered here in June 1997 at a cost of £11,500. The R.N.L.I. is a voluntary organisation whose running costs for the year 2000 is £88million; this is raised purely by public subscription.
