ALDEBURGH WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

The WI movement started in Canada in 1897; the first WI in Britain was formed in Wales in 1915 to voice women's concerns. Aldeburgh WI was started in 1921. We have approximately 90 members and meet on the second Wednesday of each month (except August) in the Church Hall commencing at 2.30 pm. We start with a business meeting followed by a guest speaker and a cup of tea. At most meetings we have a trading stall where members bring along pre-priced goods and if a sale is made, the WI takes 10% commission. The books on the Bookstall are donated for sale and profits are used to buy cards and flowers for members who are ill. Each month there is a competition in which all members are encouraged to enter.Details are given on the Programme card which is received when subscriptions are paid.

The monthly raffle is in aid of ACWW(Associated Countrywomen of the World),the worldwide organisation of country womens societies. The money is used to help women in underdeveloped countries. As well as the events detailed on our programme card, we organise coach outings to attractions and events in East Anglia. During the summer we organise rambles followed by a pub lunch, and in winter whist drives are organised. Throughout the year our Lunch Club arranges regular outings by car to local hostelries. We are also involved in community activities- Hospital Open Days, the Community Fair, Aldeburgh Carnival, Aldeburgh Summer Theatre and Aldeburgh in Bloom..
